In 2004, after building more than 25 houses, I thought I had mastered the art of efficienct building methods. After all, I had partnered with some very smart guys who actually built new homes for a living… with their own hands and wits.
In 2006 when I left for Lenoir, NC things were going to be different. I was hired by a private trust to plan and build a solar community. This trust company was directed by a Boy Scout Leader. His mission was clear: Make it Sustainable… Think long term… Build it for a lifetime… And most importantly, keep energy bills as low as possible.
So, these were the objectives we begin with and now three years later, we are at the point where we have a grassroots membership recruiting effort going on, very similar to an intentional solar community.
Solar power systems and solar thermal hot water systems with very R-48 building envelopes and sleek trim stylish mechanical systems – all ready to save the resident mucho denaro.
The systems are designed by some of the smartest guys in Western NC, Mike and Hardy at FLS Energy and Mark Fetters is ready to install insulated concrete forms into these tight well ventilated low-e homes.
Is there a demand out there? Anyone ready to throw their hat into the ring of energy independence?
